Then Jesus told his disciples, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit them if they gain the whole world but forfeit their life? Or what will they give in return for their life? " (Matthew 16:24-26)

These words of Jesus can be quite depressing. Jesus suffered and died on the cross. So is Jesus telling us that his followers must suffer and die? No! God raised Jesus from the dead on the third day so that repentance and forgiveness of sins could be proclaimed in his name to all nations. Through the atoning death of Jesus on the cross our sin is forgiven and we are able to live abundantly. Jesus tells us that his follower must "take up their cross and follow". What Jesus doesn't tell us in this passage is about our individual, personal cross. We each have a cross to bear. Our cross is not a wooden instrument of torture and death. Perhaps our cross is a task, a function, a means of participating in the ministry of Jesus Christ. There are lots of crosses laying around just waiting to be taken up. God is patient and knows that in the fullness of time someone will step forward to lift high each and every cross. Maybe your cross is volunteering to help maintain the beautiful grounds God has entrusted to Faith Chapel or helping to plan and teach Vacation Bible School or teaching an adult Sunday School class or Bible study.

There are many crosses just waiting to be taken up - while God waits. Below is a list of ministries at Faith Chapel undertaken to further Jesus' ministry of compassion and reconcilation. Many have taken up their cross by participating in these ministries. Have you found your cross yet? Have you taken up your cross? Please join together with your sisters and brothers in Christ at Faith Chapel as we strive to take up our cross daily.
